The mathematics section of the
HSPT is not high school math, such as Algebra I and Geometry. In fact,
it is math that was covered for the most part in the 5th and 6th grade.
Many 7th graders either did not learn these concepts very well or have
forgotten how to do some of the basic mathematical operations that are
included on the math and quantitative sections of the HSPT.
This course
will review the basic math skills that students need in order to be
successful on the HSPT. Students will
review mathematical operations involving decimals, percents, and
fractions, as well as one- and two-step equations, proportions,
interest and sales tax problems, and basic geometry.
In addition students will learn to
write equations from mathematical sentences and will learn to solve
series problems like those found on the quantitative section of the
HSPT.
The course
will build a strong foundation in mathematics that will help students not only to be
prepared and feel
confident in taking the math and quantitative sections of the HSPT, but
also to be successful in 8th grade
and high school
mathematics courses.
